So, You're Ready for an Agent!

So you think you're ready for a legit talent agent, huh? Let's see... You've been taking acting classes, you've got a nice headshot, and you feel confident you’re ready to commit to this as a career. You think you're ready to take Atlanta by storm. Good for you! But first…

You may be too eager and want to jump into a contract with the first agent who shows interest. But, be cautious, because there are many scams out there. There are a lot of so-called "talent agents" who are nothing more than glorified con artists. They prey on unsuspecting actors and actresses, promising them the world but delivering nothing but heartache and empty promises. So how do you avoid being scammed?

For starters, research any talent agent you're thinking of signing with. Check out their website, see if they have any positive reviews online, and talk to other actors or actresses who may have worked with them before. Also watch out for key red flags, like agents that want you to sign the contract without giving you a chance to look over it and make sure you’re ready and willing to do what it says. Also avoid any agency asking you for money to represent you. (Agents make their money from commissions.) Also avoid one's that require you to pay THEM to get “new headshots”. Now in some cases there may be fee’s for industry websites or an agent may have a preferred headshot photographer they recommend, but that’s not the same thing. If everything checks out, then proceed to the signing. But first…

Read the fine print before signing anything. Make sure you understand the terms of your contract and that there are no hidden fees or clauses that could be harmful to you later on. And finally, always trust your gut instinct. If something feels off about an agent or a situation, walk away. But if it seems like a good fit and you like the agency then sign that paperwork and CONGRATULATIONS! You’re now a represented actor. A real industry professional. So I guess we’ll see you auditioning at Frat Pack soon enough.
