The Art of the Cold Read: Do you have it?

Cold reading is a vital skill for any actor. We all know that feeling of getting a script and having little-to-no time to prepare. The ability to read a script with little or no preparation can be a daunting task, but with some practice, anyone can master the art of cold reading. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

1. Relax and take your time. Don't try to rush through the material. Listen to the words and let them sink in.

2. Highlight your lines if you can. It will make them easier to find on the page and allow you to react more fluidly.

3. Underline key words or phrases in each line of dialogue. Many times, if you can grab the key word or phrase of a line, you will find that you are able to remember the whole line, without having to read it off the page. This will keep your eyes up longer and allow you to connect more with your scene partner.

4. Make sure that your delivery is clear and engaging. Avoid monotone or flat reading. (Unless that’s what the role needs.)

5. Try to find something in the character that you can relate to. What motivates them? What are their fears and desires? By understanding the character, you will be better able to portray them on-screen or onstage.

With these tips in mind, you'll be well on your way to nailing that next cold read audition.
